312009_43032_0.pngCOMBAT HIV/AIDS, MALARIA and OTHER DISEASES

INTRODUCTION

Globally, about 8000 people die of AIDS-related conditions daily, notwithstanding the ability of anti-retroviral therapy to delay disease progression and improve quality of life significantly.

Malaria causes annually about 300 million cases of acute illness, of which more than a million are fatal.

The tuberculosis epidemic continues to be a major public heath problem globally, with currently 8.8 million new cases a year and about two million deaths worldwide.

Other major diseases, often called "Neglected Diseases", affect at least one billion people, cause immense suffering and often lifelong disabilities, but rarely kill.

HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria are a global pandemics that are debilitating developing countries and compounding the effects of poverty and social inequities.  More than six million people die annually of these diseases.

Oxfam Education offers a huge range of ideas, resources and support for developing the global dimension in the classroom and the whole school.  All of the resources on this site support Education for Global Citizenship--education that helps pupils understand their world and make a positive difference in it.

This resource uses posters and activities to introduce children to the Millennium Development Goals.  Each poster covers a theme (and a Goal), with a vibrant image for display and discussion.  Each poster also includes background information, case studies, and lesson plans.

Themes such as reducing poverty, educating children, fighting disease, and cleaning up the environment are all covered. The countries profiled by each poster include: Peru, Mali, Liberia, Burkina Faso, Nepal, Thailand, Haiti plus a final case study on the G8.

It delivers elements of Literacy, Citizenship, PSHE, PSE, and develops thinking skills, empathy, and communication skills, as well as allowing pupils to practice problem solving, and working with others.
